Meet Native Student Services and Students!
The Native Student Support fund supports Native Student Services (NSS). NSS serves hundreds of Indigenous students every year through the NET Program (transition/ongoing support for first year students), culturally grounded programming and partnerships, advocacy, and comprehensive culturally responsive academic and cultural student support. NSS is critically important for Indigenous students transitioning to college and persisting toward their goals. It provides a place where Native students can find a sense of belonging, build community with others from similar backgrounds, and strengthen identities, all guided by Indigenous values and traditions.
Meet Michael Martinez
Michael Martinez, a young Alaskan innovator, is the winner of several prestigious science awards and competitions. He is of Yup’ik and Otomi descent. Martinez graduated with a chemistry degree from UAA in 2022 and is a current chemistry PhD student at UAF. He is the founder of a green biotechnology startup, called Arctic Biotech Oath (ABO). He has been an Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) student since he was 11 when he completed Middle School Academy.
ANSEP works with students from the time they are in kindergarten all the way through to the PhD. ANSEP Acceleration Academy high school students can go from eighth grade to a Baccalaureate Degree in five years. ANSEP inspires, educates, and propels students forward. More than 600 alumni have become engineers, physicians, physicists, chemists, business leaders, and more. ANSEP is focused on providing an excellent education and a life of unlimited possibilities for every Alaskan.
Hear from Martinez on his experience with ANSEP: "I have been with ANSEP since 2011, started contributing to UAA research at the age of 16 with Dr. Holly Martinson, and I am now a PhD Chemistry student. My research focuses on sustainable lanthanide extraction and separation. The University of Alaska and ANSEP have been significant supporters in my career. I am honored to continue our partnership for the creation of new technology for Alaska as well as our nation. I envision Alaska being a leader in sustainable technologies for the Arctic, and my research in rare earth elements is an example of this becoming a reality."
