Research programs align with the needs of Alaska and the broader Pacific Northwest region, spanning environmental science, social sciences, and the arts. Students examine climate impacts on salmon migration and glacier runoff in Southeast Alaska’s coastal ecosystems, investigate the diversity of stream food webs that sustain salmon productivity, and lead studies on marine mammals, snow impurity effects, and ocean chemistry. These efforts involve interdisciplinary collaborations with government and community partners, engage students directly in fieldwork and laboratory analysis, and contribute to regional understanding of ecological, cultural, and economic systems.
